Indicator 2.1.2 Prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity in the population, based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES)

Target 2.1: By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round

Indicator 2.1.2: Proportion of family living with food insecurity

The levels of food security are defined as:

1. Food secure: No indication of difficulty with income-related food access;
2. Food insecure: Includes marginal, moderate and severe food insecurity;
3. Marginally food insecure: Exactly one indication of difficulty with income-related food access;
4. Moderately food insecure: Indication of compromise in quality and/or quantity of food consumed;
5. Severely food insecure: Indication of reduced food intake and disrupted eating patterns.

The survey is conducted nationwide, in both the provinces and the territories. It covers all individuals in Canada, excluding persons living on reserves and other Indigenous settlements in the provinces, the institutionalized population, and households in extremely remote areas with very low population density. Overall, these exclusions amount to less than two per cent of the population.
